Remember those old board games with VHS tapes? I bought one of them ages ago, and whoever sold me that crap assured me that this is the hottest thing he's got. I think all those games contributed to the gaming market anyway now all new games have cut scenes, back in time he had real actors now we have pixels However was acting really that bad? I'd say B-movies level, which is not terrible. It's effectively a goofy lightweight horror film, with first-person shooting-gallery segments. It's great fun because it doesn't take itself too seriously, and the Rastafarian driver character is genuinely great, too. The FMV is of rather good quality considering the system's limitations, and the whole thing is rather like one of those fancy FMV-based games that you'd see in arcades in the old days. Whilst it's as corny as all hell, Corpse Killer (one of the better examples) is well worth playing, and is actually not a terrible game. Turned out that films with button-pressing were a big chunk of the future - the only real difference I can see is that the FMVs were replaced with polygons instead.ĭon't be so quick to write off the Mega CD FMV games, by the by. People always refer with sarcasm to the old claims that FMV games were "the future", but seem to have missed the fact that an awful lot of modern games became interactive movies with far less gameplay and replay value than there once was. I think that it's an ironically derided genre! I didn't like the sequel to Myst which is Riven though. The single most impressive FMV related type game of them all from my point of view which I loved till the very end was Myst, but your need either a Sega Saturn, PC, Atari Jaguar CD, Amiga and maybe PSone for that. Amazing background stuff for it's time!!!! Today they are great for a nostalgia trip, they might even come across as better now then what they were back then because your in it for the fun factor than rather being ripped off wondering when the real games are going to be released for it.Īnd of course the mighty and oh-so impressive Slipheed even if it looked liked it came straight from the school of Virtua Racing with it's polygons. The only problem with these and with nearly all FMV based games was that once you had seen the footage a handful of times they became boring very quickly. I also enjoyed Star Wars Rebel Assault.Īlso games like Cobra Command on MegaCD were impressive while they lasted, interacting with a cartoon movie type thing. Sherlock Holmes on MegaCD was ok while it lasted, was too easy but it was a nice example of what these type of games could be good for. Another fav was Sewer Shark, the FMV was better than the game it's self and I loved some of the quotes such as, "Shoot the Tubes Dog Meat". However it is later mentioned that the time is only 6:54 AM.Yeah MegaCD was over used with them but now days looking back they are just a bit of fun and obviously Night Trap is a classic lol.
