![]() ![]() We present, the Plex Media Server "Universal" build for macOS. This new package includes Plex Media Server for both Intel and Apple Silicon architectures, so you don't have to worry about what you are installing. The preview version of the Plex Media Server must be installed manually and will not auto update to newer releases, which is something to keep in mind. It can be downloaded from the Plex website. On Apple silicon Macs, Plex users can expect improved transcoding speeds, though there may not be a significant difference. Menus don’t handle large media collections well (depends on connection quality). Many features require a subscription or lifetime pass.Provide cover art, music videos, trailers, and more. The code will be more stable and efficient on the CPU, according to Plex developers. Plex is possibly the most popular media server software out there, as it offers an easy setup and a highly flexible system for managing different types of media libraries. Plex can be set up on any hard drive, ideally, a NAS (network-attached storage device), but since I already use a web server to store my media collection I can install Plex on the server. Or, if you leave your PC on 24/7 you can use that too. Setting up your Plex server is a largely automated process, and getting a stream set up on the other end is usually as simple as downloading the free app for your chosen platform, be it a smart TV, web browser, XBox One, PlayStation, or Apple TV. Remote access is ready out of the box and does not require any port forwarding or additional setup. One of the first things you’ll notice about Plex is that its menus are beautiful on every platform. The menus are fast and easy to navigate, though I do run into some hiccups trying to browse my stupidly large music collection. If you have multiple terabytes of media content with metadata, cover art, etc., it will only populate this information as fast as your connection permits.Īside from this folder-specific issue, the menus are beautiful, fast, and easy to navigate from every platform I have tested. ![]() Plex transforms your library into a visual menu, adding metadata like cover art and IMDB results to enhance your viewing experience. Like other options, Plex also transcodes on the fly and automatically adjusts its performance and quality for available bandwidth. During my testing, I had no trouble with streaming wirelessly over my gigabit router and mid-tier Internet service, nor did I encounter any codec errors from playing an incompatible file. The latter has more features and costs $2.99.While the bulk of Plex’s features can be enjoyed for free, you do have to upgrade to a Plex Pass if you want to enjoy some nicer features. iMediaShare is available in the App Store, and comes in both free and premium flavors. If you already own a PS3, and don’t have access to an Apple TV, this app is definitely worth checking out. And aside from that small problem, I haven’t had any other issues with the software. I’ve noticed that my PS3 doesn’t always recognize my iPhone right away, so don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t happen immediately. If your device doesn’t populate in one of the above-mentioned tabs, navigate to Settings > Network Settings > Media Server Connection on your PS3 and make sure that it says “Enabled.” You can also manually search for media servers in the same menu. That’s it! Select which media you want to stream, kick back, and enjoy. Your iDevice should pop up on your PS3 under the Music, Video and Photo Gallery tabs, and you should be able to navigate through your content on either your PS3 or using the iMediaShare app. Turn on your PS3, and make sure both it and your iOS device are on the same Wi-Fi network. Download iMediaShare from the App Store (the free version works just fine), and launch it. ![]() It’s extremely simple, and can be done by following these few easy steps: Some of you may have already heard of the program, but for those that haven’t, this app could be a game-changer.Īs long as you have a wireless network setup in your home, an iOS device and a PS3, you can use iMediaShare to wirelessly stream media to your TV set. Using the iMediaShare application, you can use your iPhone to sling music, pictures, and videos to your PS3 with ease. And now we’re going to show you how to do it without jailbreaking. Last year, we showed you how to stream media from your iPhone to your PS3 using a jailbreak app. Luckily, it’s not too difficult for folks with a Sony PS3 system. But those that don’t own an Apple TV will find the task a bit more complicated. Between its AirPlay feature and the Apple TV, Apple has made streaming media content from your iPhone to your TV extremely simple. ![]()
